FAQ

While TMJ disorders are not typically serious, they can lead to complications if left untreated. Chronic pain may develop, affecting daily activities, and can potentially lead to changes in bite and jaw alignment over time.

Yes, TMJ disorders are relatively common, affecting millions of people worldwide. They can occur at any age but are most frequently diagnosed in adults, particularly women between the ages of 20 and 40.

What is TMJ?

Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) is at the point where jaw bone (mandibular) connects to the skull (temporal bone). It functions as a hinge for your mouth allowing you to chew and speak. Some people may experience chronic pain and discomfort in the jaw joint and surrounding tissue also known as Temporo-Mandibular Disorder (TMD). It can result in headaches, tension, painful clicking, grinding sounds, or yawning.

Treatment for TMJ using a neurotoxin!

Neurotoxins such as Botox or Dysport have been long used in medicine to treat over 20 different medical conditions including TMJ disorders. The treatment works by administering a muscle relaxing medication to the over active Masseters muscles to help reduce clenching and grinding.

Toxins can relieve TMJ symptoms. It can also contour your jawline and balance your overall facial shape.

What to expect during treatment?

The treatment itself is painless and has no significant down time. After a consultation and assessment with your aesthetic practitioner the treatment itself takes about 15 minutes to perform and with minor restrictions you can resume your regular day to day activities.

Benefits of using a neurotoxin for TMJ disorders:

In addition to relieving TMJ pain and discomfort a neurotoxin treatment have the added benefit of: ‍Reduces Headaches- improving severe headache related to TMJ symptoms. ‍Reduces Bruxism-prevent or help treat bruxism ‍Alleviates Clenching- minimizes frequent clenching, relieves pain. ‍Slims your jawline– relaxing the masseters muscles for TMJ treatment can debulk the muscle and create a slimmer and more “V” shaped lower face.

How long do the results last?

Neurotoxins temporarily relaxes the muscles. By injecting this medication into the Masseter muscles it helps to reduce TMJ symptoms. The result takes approximately 2 weeks to have an effect and can last 3-4 months.
